Where I photograph in the South of France

Luberon

The Luberon has a quality of light that is almost impossible to replicate elsewhere – warm, mineral, and slow, the way late-afternoon sun catches golden stone and turns a field of lavender into something quietly cinematic. Bastides like Gordes and Bonnieux sit high enough that the horizon opens up behind a couple without any effort. I have worked at Château d’Estoublon and Mas de la Rose, and both estates carry that same unhurried quality: the kind of backdrop that does not compete with the people in front of it.

Alpilles

The Alpilles light is harder and more sculptural than the Luberon – a mineral clarity that makes shadows sharp and stone glow white at midday, then softens to amber by six. Olive groves run in every direction, silver-green and ancient, framing a couple without any staging required. Les Baux-de-Provence and Château de Tourreau both carry that quality: a landscape that looks like it was composed long before you arrived.

Aix-en-Provence

Aix works at every scale. The Mazarin quarter offers 17th-century hôtels particuliers and near-empty streets in the early morning; the Cours Mirabeau filters Mediterranean light through a canopy of plane trees that turns midday into something gentle. Further out, the Montagne Sainte-Victoire shifts from pale limestone to deep ochre in the hour before sunset, and Château de la Gaude sits in the surrounding countryside with the kind of composed elegance that needs very little from a photographer.

Var & Saint-Tropez

The Var is where Provence meets the coast – vineyards running down to pine forests, coastal light that is brighter and more directional than inland. Château Robernier is one of the finest estates in the region: a working domaine where the grounds themselves carry the story. Saint-Tropez adds a different register, more luminous and open, with the sea always present somewhere in the frame.

Marseille & Cassis

Marseille is not a soft backdrop, and that is precisely the point. Urban ceremonies here carry a particular energy – the city’s rough-cut limestone, its port light, its unpolished honesty. Cassis and the calanques shift the register entirely: sea light bouncing off white rock, a scale that makes two people look small in the best possible way. For couples who want something less manicured, this stretch of coastline is quietly extraordinary.

French Riviera

The Côte d’Azur has its own grammar of light – brighter, more horizontal, the sea acting as a giant reflector from Cap Ferrat to Monaco. Grand Hôtel venues along this coast offer interiors and terraces where the Mediterranean is always just beyond the frame. It is a different kind of Provence, more polished, but the light remains the constant: generous, directional, and entirely itself.
