Pre-Wedding & Engagement Sessions
among the most iconic landscapes in the world
A lavender field photoshoot in Provence is a 2–3 hour pre-wedding or engagement session held among the iconic purple rows. Sessions are timed at golden hour, conducted in English, and limited to a handful of couples per season to ensure full field access.
« There is a moment, just after golden hour begins, when the lavender turns from violet to something closer to silver. And the light—warm, low, almost amber—catches the dust rising from a tractor two fields over. Time slows down. You forget there is a camera. That is the moment I wait for. »
That is Provence in July. And that is where your story deserves to be told.
I have spent the past decade photographing couples in the south of France—at mas hidden in the Luberon, at châteaux overlooking the Rhône, and, most often, in the fields. There is nowhere else on earth quite like this. The lavender fields of Provence have a way of making time slow down — of making two people feel like the only two people in the world.
This page is everything you need to know about planning a lavender field photoshoot in Provence: when the bloom happens, which fields to choose, what a session looks like in practice, and how to book.
Provence is not one lavender field. It is an entire world of them, each with its own character, its own light, its own rhythm. Here are the four regions where I work most often, and what makes each one unique.
Stretching across nearly 800 km² in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, it is the largest lavender-growing area in France. The bloom peaks from late June to early July, with rows so long they seem to converge at the horizon. The plateau is open, exposed, and luminous — perfect for wide, expansive portraits that feel genuinely cinematic.
The villages of Gordes, Ménerbes, Lacoste, and Bonnieux sit above fields that bloom slightly later than Valensole — often well into mid-July. Here the landscape is textured: stone walls, ancient oaks, and narrow paths between the rows. The light is more sheltered, the atmosphere more intimate. Perfect for couples who want something that feels personal rather than panoramic.
At 800 metres altitude, the fields around Sault bloom later than anywhere else — often into the first weeks of August. For couples who arrive in late July, Sault is frequently the only place where lavender is still in full bloom. The air is cooler, the light softer, and the roads quieter.
One of the most photographed spots in the world, and for good reason: the Cistercian abbey of Sénanque sits in a narrow valley surrounded by lavender — a scene so perfect it barely seems real.
The best time for a lavender photoshoot in Provence is late June to mid-July. Julien monitors the fields closely and advises every couple on the ideal timing for their session.

Every couple is different. Every session should be, too. Here is what a lavender field photoshoot with Julien actually looks like, from the first message to the final gallery.
Before anything else, we schedule a short video call. You tell me what you love, what makes you laugh, how you move through the world together. I use that conversation to understand which field will suit you best, and at what time of day the light will be most flattering.
Lavender is not a fixed date. I drive the fields regularly and am in contact with local farmers. In the two weeks before your session, I will advise you on which location is at peak bloom. You do not need to worry about this — I take care of it.
We meet at the field one hour before sunset. Sessions last between two and three hours. I do not give rigid directions — I create situations that make authentic moments happen naturally. You will barely notice you are being photographed.
Within three to four weeks, you receive a curated private gallery of 80 to 120 high-resolution images, fully edited in my signature style. The gallery is downloadable and shareable. Print rights are included.
All sessions include full field access, golden hour timing, bilingual guidance (French and English), and a private online gallery. Travel to the field is included for locations within 60 km of Aix-en-Provence.
If you are also booking Julien for your wedding day, the lavender session is available at a discounted rate. Ask about the combined package when you get in touch.
« Julien made us feel completely at ease from the first message. The photos from our lavender session are the most beautiful we have ever had taken. We did not expect to feel so natural in front of a camera. »
« We were nervous about the timing — we weren’t sure if the lavender would still be in bloom. Julien tracked the fields for us and chose the perfect day. The gallery made us cry. »
« We booked the lavender session as a gift to ourselves before the wedding. It was the best decision we made. Julien knew exactly when to take the photo and when to let us just be. »
The peak bloom window typically runs from late June to mid-July, with the exact dates varying by altitude and location. Valensole peaks earlier (late June), while Sault holds until early August. Julien monitors field conditions in real time and advises couples on the optimal week for their session.
Valensole Plateau, the Luberon hills (Gordes, Ménerbes, Lacoste), and the high-altitude plateau near Sault are the main areas. Each location has a different character and peak bloom time. Julien will recommend the best one based on your dates and the current bloom status.
Yes. All sessions are conducted fully in English. International couples are very welcome — a large part of the couples Julien photographs travel from the UK, the US, Australia, and Northern Europe.
Light, flowy fabrics in neutral tones work beautifully against the purple. Avoid heavy patterns or very bright colours. Julien sends a full styling guide after booking. Practical footwear is important — the rows can be uneven.
Yes. Many couples combine a lavender field session with full wedding-day coverage. The pre-wedding session also serves as an opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera before the big day. A combined discount is available — ask when you get in touch.
Julien will tell you well in advance if the bloom is likely to be over or not yet open for your chosen dates. If needed, the session can be moved to a higher-altitude location that blooms later, or rescheduled. The goal is always to get you into a field that looks exactly the way you imagined.
The lavender season is short and Julien limits the number of sessions each year. Most couples book 3 to 6 months in advance. For July sessions, availability typically fills before April.
